THE KINKS - WIKIPEDIA Y TEMAS

THE KINKS

The Kinks were an English rock band formed in Muswell Hill, North London, by brothers Ray Davies and Dave Davies in 1964. Categorized in the United States as a British Invasion band, The Kinks have been cited as one of the most important and influential rock bands of the era.[1][2] Their music was influenced by a wide range of genres, including R&B, British Music hall, folk and country. The group's original lineup consisted of Ray Davies (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Dave Davies (vocals, lead guitar), Pete Quaife (bass guitar), and Mick Avory (drums and percussion). Ray and Dave Davies remained the only permanent members in the group throughout it's run, with a frequently changing roster of bassists, keyboardists and backup singers. Pete Quaife left the group in 1969, and was replaced by John Dalton, who would remain with the group until 1978, when, upon his departure, he was replaced by Jim Rodford. Avory remained with the group throughout most of its history, leaving in 1984.[1]

The Kinks first gained prominence in 1964 with their third single, "You Really Got Me", written by Ray Davies.[1][3][2] It became an international hit upon release, topping the charts in the UK and reaching the Top 10 in the US.[4][3][2] Throughout the remainder of the decade the group released a string of commercially and critically successful singles and albums. They became known for songs and concept albums reflecting on English culture and lifestyle, fueled by Ray Davies' observational songwriting style.[2][1] Albums such as Face to Face, Something Else, The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur, Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Muswell Hillbillies and their accompanying singles are considered amongst the most influential recordings of the period.[1][5][3] The Kinks continued throughout the 1970s and found little success, but eventually experienced a revival during the New Wave era, when groups such as The Jam, The Knack, and The Pretenders covered Kinks songs, helping boost the band's record sales. In the 1990s Britpop acts such as Blur, Oasis, and Supergrass cited them as major influences.[1] Due to a lack of success and creative tension between the Davies brothers, the group split in 1996.[6]

The Kinks have charted five singles in the Top 10 on the US Billboard charts, and nine of their albums have charted in the the Top 40.[7] In the UK, the group has charted fourteen Top 20 singles on New Musical Express, with five Top 10 albums.[8] The Kinks have been the recipient of several awards and honors, including the Ivor Novello Award, for "Outstanding Service to British Music".[9] In 1990, their first year of eligibility, the original four members of The Kinks were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.[10][3]
